Leachate
Waste waters leaching from the wastes stored in municipal landfills contain high quantities of organic and inorganic pollutants. In order to prevent pollution of ground and surface waters, such type of leachates is required to be treated in compliance with the acceptable discharge limits. Leachate quality is very variable, and has a higher pollution load compared to many industrial waste water. Pollution load of leachate varies depending on many factors such as the depth type of solid waste in the landfill area, landfill age, rate of recirculating leachate, environmental interaction of leachate, design and operation of landfill.

Advanced treatment techniques such as physical treatment, chemical treatment, denitrification through aeration and biological treatment (aerobic/anaerobic) are employed in leachate treatment.
